Storyline:

1960s China timeline: In the midst of the Cultural Revolution, Ye Wenjie witnesses her father’s humiliation and death in a struggle session. At a work camp, she’s given a copy of Silent Spring. It is discovered, but she does not betray the one who gave it to her. After nearly dying in prison, she is taken to a station with a large radio telescope dish to serve the rest of her sentence. As a highly intelligent scientist, figures out its purpose before she is told.
